Babergh and Mid Suffolk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"yiv4021833258paragraph\" align=\"center\"><span class=\"yiv4021833258normaltextrun1\"><b>BABERGH AND MID SUFFOLK DISTRICT COUNCILS MEDIA RELEASE<\/b><\/span><span class=\"yiv4021833258eop\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><span class=\"yiv4021833258eop\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<h1 align=\"center\">We\u2019re rooting for new parents during COVID-19 and beyond<\/h1>\n<p class=\"yiv4021833258paragraph\"><span class=\"yiv4021833258normaltextrun1\"><b>For immediate release:\u00a0<\/b><\/span><span class=\"yiv4021833258normaltextrun1\">29 May 2020<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>A\u00a0Tree for Life scheme\u00a0in\u00a0Babergh and Mid Suffolk\u00a0which offers a\u00a0free tree for new parents,\u00a0is now open for\u00a02020\u00a0applications allowing families to apply from home during the coronavirus outbreak.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recognising that\u00a0new parents may be feeling more isolated than usual, and looking for something to look forward to with their new arrival, Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have now opened their Tree for Life applications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv4021833258MsoNormal\">It is open to all families in the districts who welcome a new arrival between 1 January and 31 December 2020, in addition to parents who may have lost a child during the same period to apply for a\u00a0remembrance\u00a0tree.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative\u00a0offers parents with a new born or newly adopted child the chance to mark their arrival by planting a tree.<\/p>\n<p>It\u00a0aims to benefit families, communities and the environment by boosting\u00a0tree coverage across\u00a0the district.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s relaunch follows a<b>\u00a0<\/b>bumper 2019 scheme with over 400 trees given away earlier in the year, ahead of the coronavirus outbreak.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv4021833258MsoNormal\">Tree collection events were held in Stowmarket and Hitcham, where expert help was on hand to advise families on their tree choice\u00a0and aftercare at home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv4021833258MsoNormal\">Open to all including those without a garden, a selection of trees were also planted with families at key locations in the districts including Needham Lake, Shotley Golden Wood, Broom Hill in Hadleigh, Gallowsfield Wood in Haughley and Sproughton Millennium Green.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv4021833258MsoNormal\">Mid Suffolk saw a total of 274 successful applications in 2019, a 53% increase in take up compared to 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv4021833258MsoNormal\">In Babergh, where the Tree for Life scheme launched for the first time in November last year, there were 196 applicants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv4021833258MsoNormal\">According to\u00a0the\u00a0Office for National Statistics, that means around 30% of families with newborns in our districts applied for the scheme, but now the councils are encouraging even more people to claim their free tree this year.<\/p>\n<p><b>Cllr Elisabeth Malvisi, Babergh District Council\u2019s cabinet member for environment, said:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201c<\/i><i>While we are in uncertain times,\u00a0I hope that\u00a0by opening applications now we can give our new families something to look forward to over coming months.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cI\u2019m proud that in just a matter of\u00a0months, Tree for Life in Babergh has blossomed beyond expectation\u00a0providing\u00a0a unique opportunity to benefit our environment\u00a0and support the county-wide climate ambitions, while\u00a0also\u00a0giving families a reason to spend time\u00a0in the garden\u00a0planting and nurturing their tree for the years to come.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201c<\/i><i>I would encourage as many people as possible to claim\u00a0their free tree.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Cllr Jessica Fleming, Mid Suffolk District Council\u2019s cabinet member for environment, said:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201c<\/i><i>I hope that while we face so much uncertainty during the coronavirus outbreak, this news brings our residents some joy to see the smiling faces of families collecting their trees earlier this year.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cThe scheme\u00a0looks to\u00a0continue\u00a0to grow\u00a0year on year\u00a0in Mid Suffolk, but of course we\u00a0still\u00a0want even more families to take up the opportunity\u00a0and\u00a0give back to our communities by making sure our environment can be enjoyed by future generations.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cI\u2019d encourage any new parent to apply online before 17 January next year.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv4021833258MsoNormal\">Families can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.babergh.gov.uk\/environment\/tree-for-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">apply for their tree on the councils&#8217;
